It is the 86th birth anniversary of ‘The King Of Romance’ Yash Chopra. Yashji taught us the meaning of romance and unconditional love. He had a career that spanned over five decades in the Hindi film industry. Till date, not a single director has presented her heroine the way Yash Chopra has. His heroines looked sensual, pristine and simply beautiful in silk sarees.

Yash Chopra has given us many romantic films to swear by. He talked about unconditional love and taught cinema lovers the real meaning of romance. From Switzerland’s snow-capped mountains to his beautiful heroines donning white sarees, one can’t forget the depth he tried to show in his ever-lasting love stories on-screen. From Dil To Pagal Hai to Veer-Zaara, there are many Hindi films loved by cinegoers and it is hard for any filmmaker to match up to the level he has set with his craft. Every 90s kid, who’s familiar with Bollywood, is grown up watching Shah Rukh Khan in the Sarson ka Khet. For girls, the heroes in the YRF Films under the supervision of senior Chopra set new benchmarks of expressing love.

On his birth anniversary today, September 27, let’s have a look at some of the best romantic proposals from the movies directed by Yash Chopra… because for him, there was no feeling grander than love and no romance bigger than the speaking eyes. Take a look!

#Chandni (1989): The chemistry between Rishi Kapoor and Sridevi in Chandni created wonders on screen. This song in particular mirrored the happiness and excitement of two love-birds. “Maine is dil pe likh diya tera naam….” — the magic of some romantic words weaved together in a song or a poem is unmatched when you are thinking about confessing your love to your one and only.

#Dil To Pagal Hai (1997): “Main usse bahut pyar karti hoon … ek din ke liye nahi … ek pal ke liye nahi … zindagi bhar ke liye“.. it’s difficult to shift focus from the beauty that Madhuri Dixit is. But, when her Pooja spoke those words on stage for Rahul, not just the audience sitting inside the stadium listened but also the audience watching them on screen took notice. Pooja spoke with a sense of both passion and regret. Regret of letting Rahul wait for her and also for rejecting his love. The confession of her feelings shows how beautiful love looks like when the two people in it have passed their share of struggle.

#Veer-Zaara (2004): Shah Rukh Khan was Veer Pratap Singh and Preity, a beautiful Pakistani woman, Zara Hayat Khan. The two fall in love but lose the precious years of their lives staying away from each other. This scene, just before the soulful ‘Do Pal Ruka Khwabon Ka Karvaan’ takes over the screen, features Veer confessing his feelings to Zara. A surprised and helpless Zara listens to him and leaves wondering about the ways to change what lies ahead of her. The proposal speaks volume of the simplicity that a lover’s true words have. “Sarhad Paar Ek Aisa Shakhs Hai Jo Aap Ke Liye Jaan Bhi De Dega…” what’s the best way to show the depth of your feelings than saying ‘I can even die for you’!

#Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012): Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan isn’t one of his much celebrated films, but his last directorial definitely had some wonderful scenes. The scenes where our lead characters confess their love to each other show the different ways to express love. Sometimes, you need to say it with the concoction of beautiful words like ‘jab tak hai jaan, jab tak hai jaan, jab tak jaan…‘ and sometimes, all you need is a passionate kiss.
