Sarbjit is a biographical drama about an Indian villager caught by Pakistanis in the border area and accused of 5 bomb blasts. Pakistanis alleged that Sarbjit was actually a RAW agent Ranjit Singh.
Aishwarya Rai plays the role of Sarbjit’s sister and is an absolute misfit for the role for she doesn't look or sound like a Punjaban at all. Her overacting is displayed abundantly in the beginning when she yells "Ghar ke liye nikla hota toh ab tak aa nahi jaataa" in supposedly Punjabi accent. In fact she acts well when she doesn't open her mouth. We wish the makers had casted Tabu or someone else for this role. Ash does not do justice to her role at all.
Randeep Hooda isn’t that great in the beginning when he plays the jolly, cheerful, happy go lucky lover/husband/brother. That genre of acting is not his forte; however she shines when her role takes a serious turn. Randeep’s hard work and brilliant acting is displayed very well in the second half of the movie. A scene where he meets his family after years is very touching and is definitely going to make you cry.
Director Omung Kumar puts in too much of melodrama in the movie. We wonder why he had to put in those unwanted songs every now and then as they were totally uncalled for.
What this movie is definitely going to do is increase Wikipedia's Sarbjit page as many Indians will try to figure out who he was and what actually happened to him. Having said that, Sarbjit isn’t that bad a movie, it is still better than the 1920s and Azhars that bollywood has been throwing upon us. Worth a onetime watch for the sake of real Sarbjit for we all must know what happened to him.
