Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar was released on May 22, 1992. The movie depicted the story of a rich student and a poor student from rival colleges who try to woo a girl, with their rivalry culminating in the most prestigious college event - the marathon cycle race.
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar was directed by Mansoor Khan, Aamir Khan's relative. He had made his directorial debut with the super-hit Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) for which he had received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, and Filmfare Award for Best Director for that year.
Mansoor Khan followed this success four years later with Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992). His last following movies Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) and Josh (2000), were moderately successful. In 2008, he made a comeback as a producer and co-produced the movie Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na along with Aamir Khan, which marked the debut of his nephew Imran Khan.
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar featured Aamir Khan, Ayesha Jhulka, Mamik Singh, Kiran Zaveri, Deepak Tijori and Pooja Bedi in the lead roles.
Interestingly, Akshay Kumar had auditioned and Milind Soman was signed for Malhotra's role before Tijori played it. Aditya Pancholi was selected for the role of Ratan, however the role went to Mamik Singh.
The music for the movie was composed by Jatin Lalit and lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The album was nominated for Best Music at the Filmfare Awards 1993. Pehla Nasha is still considered to be one of the best Bollywood songs of all time.
Saroj Khan was the choreographer for this movie but due to some problems she did not turn up when the song "Pehla Nasha" was being shot. As a result, Farah Khan, who was assisting the director, offered to step in and choreograph the song. This marked the beginning of her career as a successful choreographer.
Two of Aamir Khan's relatives make an appearance in this film. His nephew 'Imran Khan' plays the role of young Aamir while his brother Faisal Khan plays the role of a Xavier College Student.
Farah Khan was finding it extremely difficult to make Pooja Bedi dance in the song 'Pehlanasha' in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander 1992, finally she decided to get a studio fan and make Pooja stand on the car and blow her dress which can be seen in the song.
Juhi Chawla was approached for the film. She declined because Nasir Hussein wanted immediate dates and she could not oblige.
Nagma was signed for a lead role but opted out because she did not want to do a 2 heroine film.
The story is heavily inspired by the Hollywood film Breaking Away (1979).
