Ahead of Gandhi Jayanti, Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma are here with Sui Dhaaga: Made In India, an inspiring story of self-reliance. The audience has been flocking to the theatres, drawn by the rustic appeal of the film. Of course, the star power is a huge factor, as well. Despite losing a major chunk of its business because of the Asia Cup 2018 finals, Sui Dhaaga: Made In India earned Rs 8.30 crore on its opening day.

Directed by Sharat Katariya, the film tells the story of Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and his wife Mamta (Anushka Sharma). Mauji is a salesman in a shop that sells sewing machines, and is often subjected to humiliation at the whims of his employer. Unable to see her husband treated like this, Mamta requests him to start his own tailoring business. Thus begins the journey from impossible to unstoppable.

Sui Dhaaga: Made In India has already eclipsed its competitor, Vishal Bhardwaj's Pataakha, which also hit the theatres on Friday. Pataakha raked in only Rs 90 lakh on Friday.

Critics have given a thumbs up to Varun and Anushka's film. The film is expected to pick up further over the weekend, due to strong word of mouth. It will also benefit from the Gandhi Jayanti holiday.

Sui Dhaaga: Made In India also found an admirer in Virat Kohli. The cricketer took to Twitter to praise the film to the high heavens. "What an emotional roller coaster with brilliant performances by the entire cast," he wrote.

While he found Varun Dhawan's portrayal of Mauji "superb", it was Anushka's character Mamta who "stole (his) heart". "Her ability to be so quiet yet so powerful and impactful makes you fall in love with her," he wrote, adding that he was "so proud" of her.
