In almost every country the world over, Jews have faced religious persecution but India is one of the few countries where Jews were never ill-treated. Most of Jews residing in India consider India their motherland and consider Israel as their fatherland.

Of the 5000 Jews remaining in India, the largest community is concentrated in Mumbai, where 3,500 have stayed over.

Rosh Hashanah 2017 will begin in the evening of Wednesday, 20th September, 2017 and end in the evening of Friday, 22nd September, 2017.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. Literally meaning "the head of the year" in Hebrew. During services, a hollowed-out ram's horn, known as a shofar, is blown, symbolizing a call to repentance. Many Jews also observe a tradition called tashlich, meaning "casting off" in Hebrew, in which they go to a nearby river or lake and throw pieces of bread, which signifies the washing away of sin.

As with the Sabbath, Orthodox Jews are not allowed to use electricity or work during Rosh Hashanah, which helps with the reflection element, although the rules are slightly more lax when it comes to carrying. Like with many Jewish holidays, it’s essentially an excuse to get together with your family and gorge on delicious food.
