Dharmendra

From Punjab to the Silver Screen

Born Dharam Singh Deol in 1935 in Sahnewal, Punjab, Dharmendra's journey to Bollywood was a testament to sheer perseverance.

He started as a drilling company worker before finding his breakthrough in 1960 by winning a national talent contest organized by Filmfare.

Without any film industry connections, he made his debut in Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960).

Though his debut went unnoticed, he quickly rose to fame with his unstudied, natural acting style, which made him highly relatable to everyday Indians.

An Unmatched Legacy of Hits

Throughout the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, Dharmendra defined versatility in Hindi cinema.

Whether it was a profound drama like Satyakam, a blockbuster action-comedy like Dharam Veer, or delightful lighthearted romance like Chupke Chupke, he could do it all.

His performance as the fearless, lovestruck Veeru in Sholay (1975) remains a cornerstone of Indian cinema.

He worked effortlessly across generations, eventually starring alongside his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol in modern hits like Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011).

The Real-Life Hero

Off-screen, Dharmendra’s charm was just as potent.

His personal life garnered significant media interest, from his early marriage to Prakash Kaur to his iconic romance and subsequent marriage to Bollywood's Dream Girl, Hema Malini, in 1980.

A man of the people, he also served as a Member of Parliament for Bikaner, Rajasthan (2004–2009).

Known for his deep humility and generous nature, he won the hearts of both his peers and millions of fans.

The Final Farewell

Dharmendra left for his heavenly abode on November 24, 2025, in Mumbai, passing away at home at the age of 89.

His passing truly marked the end of an era in Indian cinema.

In recognition of his monumental contributions to the arts, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2012 and subsequently posthumously conferred India's second-highest civilian honor, the Padma Vibhushan.

Dharmendra left behind not just a rich cinematic vault, but a sprawling, loving family including his six children and thirteen grandchildren.

He remains deeply woven into the cultural fabric of India, living on in the hearts of his fans.
