Exactly 20 years ago today, Kuch Kuch Hota HaiÛª was released to a grand box office opening marking Karan JoharÛªs directorial debut, a grand larger than life in the Bollywood industry. The film had the audience on an emotional rollercoaster and had scenes which are still re-enacted to this day in current cinema.

What made Kuch Kuch Hota HaiÛª such a strong and powerful movie was that it was a simple storyline but with some very touching moments. It looked at relationships at different levels – from friendships to lovers – and played with the concept that you donÛªt always realise you have our one true love in front of you from the start. The college based part of the film was modelled on an American High School environment with the popular ones being in control and running the school. The second half was more on a traditional note with culture being interwoven into the storyline. Director Karan Johar told the story of the film from the heart and despite it being his debut film, he told it with finesse. There were some truly magical moments in so many scenes from Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol dancing in the rain to the little boy at camp begging Kajol not to leave.

#Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan were the original choice for Rahul and Anjali. Karan Johar had worked with them in DDLJ, where Johar had assisted Aditya Chopra and had even acted in the film, so he knew the working style of the two actors.
#The entire film was shot in nine and half months with a substantial part of it shot in Mauritius.The title song was filmed in several locations in Scotland over ten days.
#During the bicycle sequence in the 'Yeh Ladki Hai Deewana' song, Kajol lost control of her bike, fell flat on her face and was knocked unconscious while also injuring her knee. The fall was bad enough for Kajol to temporarily lose her memory. The only person she could remember was her then-boyfriend and now-husband Ajay Devgn.

#Karan Johar wanted Rani Mukerji to be dubbed due to her husky voice, not knowing that her voice would become her trademark. Rani's voice in fact dubbed in a film called 'Ghulam' which released the same year. In fact, Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh suggested Mukerji for the role after watching her in Raja Ki Aayegi Baaraat.
#Salman Khan's extended cameo was initially offered to Saif Ali Khan who turned down the role. Salman Khan and Kajol were not on talking terms while shooting "Saajanji Ghar Aaye". Salman Khan won his first Filmfare award(Best Supporting Actor) for his role as Aman.
#Malhotra, Farah Khan, choreographer Geeta Kapoor, director Nikhil Advani, and even Johar's mom, Hiroo Johar, are all seen in different shots in the film.
#Johar first wrote a story which was a love triangle between a tomboy, a very pretty girl, and a slightly insensitive boy, but he shelved the idea. He then wrote another plot about a widower and his child, which he rejected as well. Eventually, he decided to merge the two stories into one for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
