Rishi Kapoor’s short film Rajma Chawal, a light-hearted story about family in the age of social media, is all set to release on Netflix. The OTT platform has acquired the rights to the Leena Yadav directorial. Set in the Chandni Chowk area in Delhi, Rajma Chawal captures the relationship between a father attempting to reconnect with his estranged son through social media, a new world for him. Netflix called it “an emotional roller-coaster, interspersing grief and the pressure of family expectations with humor, compassion and love.” Rishi Kapoor plays the role of the father, Amyra Dastur. Other cast includes Aparshakti Khurana and Anirudh Tanwar in his debut role as the son.

After her 2015 film, Parched, starring Radhika Apte, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Suvreen Chawla, director Leena Yadav's next film focuses on a father-son relationship. Rajma Chawal explores the changing means of communication with the influence of social media and how it becomes even more challenging for an already strained relationship between a father (Rishi Kapoor) and son (Anirudh Tanwar) to stabilise. “The themes in Rajma Chawal are the generation gap, the changing modes of communication, the role of social media and there’s also a love story in it,” says Yadav. Old and New Delhi, and even Gurgaon feature often in the film, playing host to a bunch of characters. Shot in actual locations, often ones jam-packed with the chaos of real life flavouring the method of cinema, the film is a potpourri of many strands of the characters’ lives, primarily delving into the strained father-son relationship, a love story featuring the son that was unintentionally put in motion by the father, and the son's own dream of making it big as a musician.

Rajma Chawal starring Rishi Kapoor, Aniruddh Tanwar and Amyra Dastur will release on Netflix on November 30 after being screened at the London Film Festival and at home in MAMI this year. Instead of a theatrical release, Rajma Chawal will be on Netflix, available for the global audience. The film also has a bunch of decent songs by Hitesh Sonik, the lyrics of which are also used by Anirudh's character Kabir to express his own state of mind. Kabir's journey essentially drives the film, and he's an aspiring musician, so this aspect was critical, and Sonik largely delivers.
