Remember the Indian pop stars of the 90s? Lucky Ali, Usha Uthup, Alisha Chinai... Some of their songs were our anthems as we grew up. After nearly two decades, thanks to YouTube and the digital Indie revolution, India's pop and non-film music scene has come full circle and is totally back with a bang. The golden era of indie pop music where divas and studs belted out numbers like nobody's business which were served red hot on MTV. Here are some pop hits that were total game changers in their time, makes us wish that somehow we could revisit the era again.
#1. Baba Sehgal: Engineer turned rap singer, Harjit Singh Sehgal, popularly known as Baba, has carved a niche for himself on the Indian Pop scene. Known for his whacky Lyrics, wild sense of humour and earthy rhythms, Baba has shot into the limelight. A much sought after host, stage performer and model, Baba commands a large audience wherever he performs. Baba shot to fame the album 'Thanda Thanda Pani'(1992), this included numerous hit tracks like Thanda Thanda Pani, Chor and Dil Dhadke.
#2. Alisha Chinai: Chinai is most famous for her 1996 single and album, titled "Made in India" which contains her most famous track "Lover Girl." Throughout her successful years, she had a number of big filmi hits like Roundhe (Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya), Sona Sona Roop Hai (Bollywood/ Hollywood), and the controversial Sexy turned Baby Mujhe Log Bole (Khuddar).
#3. Bally Sagoo: He gained success as a DJ in the club scene and broke into music by revamping old Bollywood hits and fusing them with hip hop. He is widely credited as one of the original pioneers of what is now modern Indian music, and for triggering the explosion of modern Bhangra pop music. He released an album in 1994 album Bollywood Flashback, followed up with Rising From The East in 1996. Bally runs a production company named Ishq Records that manages several artistes like Bohemia and Gunjan. He has worked twice with the Pakistani pop singer Hadiqa Kiyani.
#4. Anamika: She was also nominated for the Channel V awards category for Best Album, Best female pop singer and Best video that year. She made contributions to the movie Auzaar with the song ‘Dil de de na’ alongwith singer, Jojo . In 1998, Anamika launched her second album Intezar, with some catchy numbers like Kaaala Sha Kaala, Nindra, Aaja Aaja and Kahi karta hoga intezaar.
#5. Lucky Ali: Lucky Ali (born 19 September 1958), born as Maqsood Mehmood Ali, is an Indian singer-songwriter, composer and actor. Lucky Ali is best known for his soulful but strikingly simple ballad-style singing and melodious voice. Lucky Ali made his debut on the Indian pop scene with the soulful album Sunoh which established him as a pop singer. This album won many of the top awards in Indian music, including the Best Pop Male Vocalist at the 1996 Screen Awards and the Channel V Viewers Choice Award in 1997.
