It is the 89th birth anniversary of the veteran film producer Yash Johar. He was the father of Karan Johar and known for his lavish and larger than life sets, exotic locations, stunning wardrobes, melodious music, big starcasts and tradition and family values films.

Born in 1929, he produced many blockbusters including Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Yash Johar started his career in the film industry as a photographer. He then went on to work in the production unit of many films including Sunil Dutt’s production company Ajanta Arts in 1952 and Dev Anand’s Navketan films in 60s and 70s involving films like Guide, Jewel Thief, Prem Pujari and Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

His new phase in career began in the year 1976 when he established his own production house, Dharma Productions. The Production house produced some of the most extravagant films of all times like the Dostana, which was also the first film of the banner and Duniya Meri Mutthi Me. Apart for working for his own films Yash Johar has also worked as an Associate Producer for Baloo Productions Jungle Book, a venture by Walt Disney, which was shot in India in 1994. Dharma Production also worked as a Production Service Company for Walt Disney in The Last Dance (1995) and Armageddon (1998).

Besides being a producer, Yash Johar also held various important positions including the General Secretary of Film Industry Welfare Trust, Member of United Producers Forum, Member of the Managing Committee of Film Producers Guild of India Ltd. and Treasurer of the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers. Johar passed away on June 26, 2004 in Mumbai at an age of 75 of heart infection.
