Padmavati been marred in a controversy that the film has 'distorted' history of Rajput queen Padmini. Madhya Pardesh and Rajasthan Film Distributors have refused to pick up the film. Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh also said that nobody will accept the distortion of history and those who are protesting are rightly doing so.

Padmavati was scheduled to release on December 1, 2017, however the release has been deferred. No confirmed date has been announced yet by the filmmakers. The movie was submitted to the CBFC for certification but it was returned to the makers because of 'incomplete application'.
