M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story got an excellent opening. The film opened even better than Shahrukh Khan starrer Fan. M.S. Dhoni opening is the second highest in 2016, right after Salman Khan starrer Sultan. This movie has become the biggest opener in the biopic genre in Bollywood.
Fan was approx 140 Min long whereas M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story is appprox. 180 Min long. According to BoxOfficeIndia, "there is a dubbed version in Tamil and Telugu and that has also done very well. It is likely to be the second highest opening of the year behind Sultan (Rs. 36.59 crore) but beating Fan (Rs. 19.07 crore) and also the likes of Housefull 3 and Rustom by big margins. The collections of the film are also likely to come among the top fifteen opening days ever and as far as non holidays go it will be in fifth or sixth place. The public especially the youth have come in a big way on the opening day across the country. The multiplex business is fantastic while single screens have also performed well."

The movie, however, has not performed as well in the North compared to Mumbai and South. Analysts point out that only big star movies tend to open better in North India.
