Bollywood's off-beat movies like A Death In the Gunj and Lipstick Under My Burkha won the top honours at the 2017 New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF). While Konkana Sen Sharma won the best actress award for her role in ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’, a film that explores women's sexuality, she also won the Best Director award for 'A Death In The Gunj', a drama-thriller that features an ensemble cast of Vikrant Massey, Tillotama Shome, Om Puri, Tanuja, Gulshan Devaiah, Kalki Koechlin, Jim Sarbh, and Ranvir Shorey.
A Death In The Gunk is set in the town of McCluskieganj during winter 1979. What starts as an uneventful family holiday takes a twist when the guests start playing with the spirits. It is nothing tangible but insinuates its way into the group until the holiday ends in an implosion, resulting in an unavoidable event.
Both the award winning movies are yet to release officially in Indian cinemas.
