Twinkle Khanna talks to the BBC on why we need to get rid of the 'Menstruation Tax ' globally.

Padman, an adaptation of Twinkle Khanna's own novel on Arunachalam Muruganantham stars Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte. Twinkle Khanna hopes that the movie will bring awareness. This will be Twinkle Khanna's production debut. Padman is a biopic on Arunachalam Muruganantham, the inventor of a low-cost sanitary pad making machine in India. Muruganantham has innovated grass-root mechanisms for generating awareness about traditional unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India.

In an interview to the BBC World, Twinkle Khanna expressed her shock on the amount of tax the government of India imposes on sanitary pads in India. She said, India has 12% GST on Sanitary Pads, whereas we don't have GST on brooms. She was amused that the Government wants women to keep their houses clean, but was not bothered about their health and hygiene. She failed to understand why the government was so insensitive towards the issue. She also questioned why the United States have no tax on Viagra in many states, but have taxes imposed on Sanitary Pads.
