1. Sultan: Salman Khan starrer, as expected, ruled the charts this year and crossed the 300 crore mark. Moreso, it even inspired an Indian wrestler to win the coveted Olympic bronze medal in wrestling at the Rio Olympics 2016. Salman Khan's next movie will be directed by Kabir Khan and is titled Tubelight, and is based on Indo-China theme. It even features a Chinese actress.
2. Rustom: Though Rustom has been severely bashed by critics across India, it did not deter Akshay fans to flock in to the cinema halls and watch their favorite star on the big screen. Rustom is continuing its dream run at the box office and has become the 2nd highest grosser of 2016 after Sultan. What was interesting is that Rustom caused a severe decline in Mohenjo Daro's business. Mohenjo Daro was expected to do well, but the deviation from history, poor CGI and shoddy direction stopped Mohenjo Daro's mission of being a box office success. Rustom filled the void and became one of the highest grossers of 2016.
3. Airlift: If there is one star after the Khans who rule the box office like no one else, it is Akshay Kumar. This is Akshay Kumar's second movie in the top 3 as per box office collections in India. Airlift had a unique story and aroused patriotism in ever Indian who watched the movie. With great acting by Akshay Kumar and other cast. unique story and brilliant direction, Airlift became the 3rd highest grosser of 2016.
4. Housefull 3: So we have one more Akshay Kumar movie in the Top 5 highest grossers of 2016. So if there is one actor who is beneficial for the producers, then it has to be Akshay Kumar. His Housefull 3 did extremely good business at the box office. This Bollywood comedy directed by Sajid Farhad opened to negative reviews but that did not stop Bollywood fans from flocking in to the cinema halls.
5. Fan: This SRK movie didn't do that well at the box office but this "that well" didn't stop it from being in the Top 5 highest grossing Bollywood movies in India.
6. Baaghi: Yes, this is an unexpected entry in the Top 10 but Bollywood action movie Baaghi starring Tiger Shroff did extremely well at the box office. Directed by Sabbir Khan, this Tiger Shroff movie did outstanding business at the box office in India.
7. Neerja: A true story about air hostess Neerja who saved hundreds of lives in an airplane hijack. Though Sonam Kapoor needs to improve her acting skills, the movie was well made and did good business at the box office through word of mouth.
8. Kapoor and Sons: This movie starring Alia Bhatt, Fawad Khan and Sidharth Malhotra made it to the top 10 highest grossers in India in 2016.
9. Dishoom: Dishoom was made with a very high budget, yet it managed to recover the amount invested and made good business at the box office in India.
10. Udta Punjab: Udta Punjab could have done better business had it not been leaked by the censor board ahead of its official release date. Alia Bhatt deserves a special mention for her performance in this movie. We won't be surprised if she walks away with many awards for her role in this movie.
