Sonu Walia was born in New Delhi on 19th February, 1964. She won the Miss India pageant in 1985 and represented India at the Miss Universe 1985 beauty pageant. She took over from Juhi Chawla, Miss India 1984 and, after completing her responsibilities, relinquished her crown to Mehr Jesia in 1986. She holds a psychology degree.
She made her Bollywood debut in Ketan Anand's shart where she played a model. The movie was released in February, 1986. She then got a very crucial role of her life in Rakesh Roshan's 'Khoon Bhari Maang' which also starred Rekha and Kabir Bedi. Sonu Walia played Kabir Bedi's girlfriend in that movie who plots Rekha's murder with him. The movie was commercially very successful and Sonu Walia won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Khoon Bhari Maang. Her song "Jeene Ke Bahaane Lakhon Hai" gained immense popularity.
In 1988, she also appeared in 'Akarshan' and the movie was famous for having many bold scenes. A kissing scene of hers became very famous. Sonu Walia also appeared in popular movies like Hatim Tai starring Jeetendra and Khel starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. She is last remembered for her role as Salma in Hema Malini's directorial debut, 'Dil Aashna Hai', which released in 1992
Sonu Walia also played the role of Maharani Chitrangadha, mother of Babruvahana, in Mahabharat TV show from 1988 through 1990. She also acted in TV Serials like Mr. Mintoo and Betaal Pachisi with Tom Alter and Shahbaz Khan.
Sonu Walia got married to Pratap Singh in 2000. It all began with a meeting in 2000 with Surya Pratap Singh, a US-based hotelier, for a project that never took off. But they were engaged within a month and married a month after that. Sadly, her husband fell ill a few years later. They went through all the tests, except one. Her husband died of kidney failure in 2010.
Sonu Walia is back in India and she recently filed a police complaint after being bombarded by lewd calls and dirty videos. The actor opens up about her ordeal for the past month and standing up for herself. She is currently busy in film production and is back in Bollywood but not as an actress.
