  • Bhakti barve's character is based on Shobha De
  • The voice of Bhakti Barve who plays the character of Shobha, the editor of Khabardar was dubbed by Anita Kanwar.
  • The names of the two lead characters played by 'Naseeruddin Shah' and 'Ravi Baswani' are references to the names of the production controller, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and the assistant director, Sudhir Mishra, both of whom went on to become well-known Hindi movie directors.

  • Bollywood director Vidhu Vinod Chopra played a cameo of Dushasan in the Maharbharat play at the climax of the film.
  • The code "Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Ata Hai (What makes Albert Pinto angry)" which Naseeruddin Shah's character gives to Satish Kaushik's character is actually the name of a film of which Kundan Shah, among other things, was the assistant director and in which Naseeruddin Shah played the lead character, Albert Pinto.
  • Kundan Shah won the 1984 Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director for his work.

  • Anupam Kher's voice was used to dub a construction worker talking to Pankaj Kapur.
  • Blow-Up, a 1966 English-language film directed by Michelangelo Antonioni in which a photographer believes he may have witnessed a murder and unwittingly takes photographs of the killing, was an inspiration for Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. The filmmakers paid homage by naming the park in which the murder occurs as "Antonioni Park".
  • Anupam Kher was cast as a 'disco killer' in the film, a gangster who eliminated his victims while he danced. All his scenes were shot, but discarded from the final cut at the editing stage.
