Directed by Alankrita Shrivastava and produced by Prakash Jha, Lipstick Under My Burkha stars Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, Sushant Singh, Vikrant Massey, Shashank Arora, Jagat Singh Solanki & Vaibhav Tatwawaadi.

The film story revolves about four women - burqa-clad college girl, a young beautician, a mother of three and a 55-year-old widow who rediscovers her sexuality.

Lipstick Under My Burkha was screened at the Mumbai Film Festival (MFF or MAMI) that was held from 20 to 27 October 2016. The film also premiered at the Tokyo Film Festivals, where it won the Spirit of Asia Prize and the Oxfam Award for Best Film on Gender Equality. In January 2017, the Central Board of Film Certification refused to certify the film, stating that "The story is lady oriented, their fantasy above life. There are contentious sexual scenes, abusive words, audio pornography and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of society".

According to Times of India, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), famous for starting and co-producing the annual Golden Globe Awards, has chosen Lipstick Under My Burkha as the official film for the HFPA screening.

At the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA), where the film was officially selected to screen on the opening night, director of IFFLA, Christina Marouda announced the news.

"We are honored that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has chosen our opening night film, Lipstick Under My Burkha, to be an official Golden Globes qualifying screening. The director of the film will now have the opportunity to properly plan a Golden Globes campaign should she choose to submit the film for nomination."

She added, "Our goal in working closely with Hollywood Foreign Press Association is to ensure that the Golden Globes are on the radar of filmmakers in India and that they become more and more aware of this platform and can begin to formulate their strategy."
