Making a comercially & critically successful movie is a dream for every debutant directors. The success of the very first movie will decide the future these directors. Here's a list of director's who got much praise from audience & critics after their very first movie.

Karan Johar (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai)

Karan Johar made his directorial debut with the blockbuster romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which earned him the Filmfare Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay. His next two films were the ensemble dramas Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), which were both very successful in the overseas market. His counter-terrorism drama My Name Is Khan (2010) earned him his second Filmfare Award for Best Director. These, along with the several successful films he has produced under the Dharma Productions banner, have established him as one of the leading director-producers in Hindi cinema.

Sooraj Barjatya (Maine Pyar Kiya)

He made his directorial debut with the 1989 film Maine Pyar Kiya, a romantic musical film about friendship. He followed it with the film Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, which became one of the most commercially successful Bollywood films worldwide at the time. In 1999, Barjatya directed the commercially and critically successful film Hum Saath-Saath Hain. Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Sooraj Barjatya's two consecutive films, are still placed among the top ten most successful films of the last 80 years.

Aditya Chopra (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge)

Aditya Chopra started his carrer as an assistant director. After gaining a respectable amount of experience, started independently at the age of 23 with the all-time blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, with Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, for which he was the director and writer. The film was produced by his father Yash Chopra, under the YRF banner. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge eventually went on to become one of the biggest hits of all time[20] and won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

Farhan Akhtar (Dil Chahta Hai)

Farhan began his career in Bollywood by working as an assistant director in Lamhe (1991) and Himalay Putra. Akhtar, after establishing a production company named Excel Entertainment along with Ritesh Sidhwani, made his directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and received critical acclaim for portraying modern youth. The film also won a National award.

Rajkumar Hirani (Munnabhai MBBS)

Rajkumar Hirani's first directorial venture was Munnabhai MBBS (2003), starring Sanjay Dutt, which is considered a cult classic. It broke all formulaic conventions associated with Bollywood films. Most of his movies have won several awards, including the national awards, and have often been regarded by the media and audiences as some of the most path-breaking films in the history of Indian cinema. He has won 15 Filmfare Awards.

Gauri Shinde (English Vinglish)

Shinde has made her directional debut with the highly acclaimed English Vinglish (2012), which marked the comeback of actress Sridevi. Shinde featured in the Financial Times 2012 list of '25 Indians To Watch'.The movie went on to receive both critical and commercial success. Besides the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director, she was awarded the 'Laadli National Media Awards for Gender Sensitivity'.

Vikramaditya Motwane (Udaan)

Motwane was a long-time assistant of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and collaborated with Bhansali on the films Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Devdas (2002). He directed the song sequences in Anurag Kashyap's unreleased film Paanch. His directorial debut Udaan (2010) was selected to compete in the 'Un Certain Regard’ category at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival and also won seven Filmfare awards.

AR Murugadoss (Ghajini)

AR Murugadoss's first Hindi movie was Ghajini remake of Murugadoss's own 2005 Tamil film of the same name. Ghajini became the highest-grossing Indian film of 2008, and the first Indian film to cross the ₹100 crore mark domestically, creating the 100 Crore Club.

9. Prabhu Deva (Wanted)

Prabhu Deva's first Bollywood directorial venture was Wanted. Wanted was also the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year 2009. The movie gave his career a new lease of life. It was the first time fans saw him single-handedly attack dozens of goons and defeating each one of them.
